Nordic Artists’ Centre Dale (NKD) — an art residency in Norway

One of the most well-known residencies in Northern Europe, operating in the format of focused individual practice. The program annually welcomes around 30 artists and researchers and is fully funded by the state. Its main focus is on visual and spatial art forms, artistic research, and work with materials.

Format and conditions
The residency duration is 2–3 months. Participants receive fully equipped accommodation, a private studio, and a monthly stipend of €1,200–1,500. The program takes place in a remote natural environment in Western Norway and creates conditions for full concentration on one’s project without external pressure.

Environment and infrastructure
The residency provides access to workshops, technical support, and the region’s professional artistic community. The combination of the northern landscape, quietness, and well-developed infrastructure contributes to a deep artistic and research process.

International context
The program values a balance between isolation and institutional support. Participation helps build connections with Scandinavian cultural institutions and often becomes a basis for long-term international collaborations. The residency is open to artists from different countries and supports interdisciplinary practices.

Who it is for
The resource is particularly relevant for artists working in visual, spatial, architectural, multimedia, and research-based art, as well as for practitioners for whom concentration, quiet, and intensive work within a northern environment are essential.
