Cité Internationale des Arts — an international art residency in Paris
The residency is perceived not as temporary accommodation, but as a full-fledged point of entry into the European cultural context, where individual practice develops within a dense international environment.
History and scale
The residency center was founded in 1965 and is located in the very heart of Paris. Each year, around 300 artists from different countries live and work here, making it one of the largest and most well-known residency complexes in the world. From the very beginning, the program has been oriented toward international exchange, research, and experimental artistic practices.
Living and working conditions
Participants receive fully equipped accommodation and studio space, adapted to different artistic practices. The residency format allows artists to focus on their work while remaining fully integrated into the city’s professional life — with access to museums, galleries, residencies, and institutions.
Partnerships and professional environment
Many programs are implemented in cooperation with UNESCO, the Institut français, Art Explora, foundations, and international cultural organizations. This partnership model ensures a high level of professional support and creates conditions for sustainable international connections.
Format and duration of programs
The duration of residencies ranges from two to twelve months. The format is suitable both for emerging artists at a stage of expanding their practice and for artists with significant professional experience. Within the residency, exhibitions, open studios, masterclasses, performances, and network-based projects aimed at developing international visibility are possible.
Community and exchange
The residency structure combines conditions for individual work with interdisciplinary interaction. The large international community of residents fosters exchange of experience, joint projects, and the formation of professional networks, which often continue beyond the residency period.
Who it is for
Thanks to its extensive partnership network and location in Paris, the residency has become an important reference point for artists oriented toward professional growth, international exchange, and work within a cultural ecosystem. The program is suitable for artists from different disciplines for whom context, time, and institutional support are essential.
