Antre Peaux — vacancy for director of cultural centre in France (Bourges, full-time)
This position involves strategic and artistic leadership in an interdisciplinary cultural space where contemporary art, music, performance, theatre, and multimedia intersect.
The organisation was established in 2020 as a result of the merger of two independent structures, Emmetrop and Bandits-Mages.
Today, it is an interdisciplinary platform that supports alternative cultural practices, experimental art and new art forms.
The space is actively integrated into the cultural life of the city and is considered one of the significant partners of the Bourges 2028 programme — European Capital of Culture.
Key responsibilities
The role covers three key areas:
Artistic strategy
Project development and growth, planning exhibitions and residencies, strengthening local roots and international connections.
Management and finance
Budget strategy, grants, fundraising, oversight of legal and administrative matters, team management.
Partnerships and representation
Working with government agencies, cultural networks and professional associations, participating in negotiations and forming long-term agreements.
Who this might suit
This position is intended for specialists with significant experience in managing cultural structures or artistic projects, and an understanding of the associative model of management and cultural policy in France.
This is not just an administrative position. The role involves developing and implementing artistic and cultural projects, developing the visual arts programme, and strategically positioning the institution at the local and international levels.
The candidate is expected to have
experience in strategic management,
an understanding of budgeting and non-profit accounting,
experience in artistic programming (particularly in the field of visual arts),
proficiency in English and French.
If you work as a curator, head of an independent space, or coordinator of large-scale projects and are considering a move to the institutional level — this is an opportunity to enter an international leadership context.
How the selection process works
After preliminary selection, candidates will be asked to prepare a detailed institutional development plan based on the guidance note provided. The final appointment is planned after face-to-face interviews (April 2026).
Preparing a strategic document may require serious analytical work: a financial model, programme logic and a vision for positioning. This is a case where not only your CV is important, but also your ability to propose a convincing development concept.
Such vacancies are rarely advertised openly and even more rarely with a transparent selection procedure.
For cultural managers from Eastern Europe, this could be a step towards a stable international position, provided they have experience, strategic thinking and a willingness to work within the French institutional field.
