Awesome Foundation — international $1,000 microgrant for creative, cultural and social initiatives

Small independent projects often fall between two extremes: they are too “small” for major institutional grants, yet do not fit commercial funding models. It is precisely these kinds of initiatives that the Awesome Foundation works with – an international network of microgrants that supports creative, educational, cultural and community projects around the world.
The Foundation awards grants of $1,000 to independent initiatives, artistic projects, digital formats, educational ideas and local communities. Support is provided through local chapters that independently select projects for funding.
One of the programme’s distinctive features is its openness to experimental and small-scale initiatives that are difficult to fit into the framework of traditional grant competitions. Many such projects are carried out by independent creators, small teams or local communities and serve as a way to test a new idea, launch a public initiative or secure initial international support.

What is supported
The Foundation considers a wide range of initiatives:
— artistic and cultural projects;
— educational programmes;
— community initiatives;
— digital and online formats;
— experimental ideas;
— social and research projects;
— initiatives related to access to culture, information and community support.
For the programme, the idea itself, its cultural or social value and potential impact are more important than the scale of the project or the formal status of the applicant.

What is not supported
The Awesome Foundation does not fund the following:
— business development;
— commercial start-ups;
— personal expenses;
— medical treatment;
— housing and living costs;
— projects focused solely on profit.
However, the foundation is quite open to independent cultural and social initiatives, particularly if the project has an educational, social or community focus.

Who is the programme suitable for
The programme may be particularly useful for:
— independent artists;
— small-scale cultural initiatives;
— creators of digital projects;
— community and educational initiatives;
— young creative teams;
— projects working to improve access to art, information and international opportunities.
The grant can also be a good opportunity to test a new idea or receive initial international support without complicated bureaucracy.

How to apply
Applications are submitted via a short online form.In the application, you need to briefly describe the project, explain why the idea matters and how the microgrant would support its development.
The Foundation does not require complex project proposals or extensive documentation. Many chapters make decisions fairly quickly, and the microgrants themselves are awarded monthly.
When applying, you can choose a specific local chapter or the ‘Any Chapter’ option for international and online projects.

Why the programme remains important for independent initiatives
Today, the Awesome Foundation brings together dozens of independent chapters around the world and has already funded over 7,700 projects, distributing more than $7.7 million in support to small-scale initiatives, artistic projects, community programmes and experimental ideas. Thanks to its simple application process and year-round intake, the foundation remains one of the most accessible international opportunities for small cultural initiatives, community projects and independent creators.
In addition to funding, the programme helps small independent initiatives gain additional visibility through the foundation’s community, local chapters and the public presentation of projects on the platform. For many cultural, educational and community initiatives, this is a chance to test a new idea, share the project with a wider audience and receive initial international support without complicated bureaucracy.

There is no fixed deadline for the programme – applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.
