Eamonn McCabe Fellowship 2026 — International £3000 Fellowship for Photographers Under 30

Royal Photographic Society (RPS), together with the family of renowned British photojournalist Eamonn McCabe and The Guardian, has opened applications for Eamonn McCabe Fellowship 2026 — an international fellowship for photographers under the age of 30. The winner will receive £3000 to develop a new photography project, professional mentoring and the opportunity to present their work to an international audience through the Royal Photographic Society and The Guardian.

About the Programme
The fellowship was established in 2024 in memory of British photojournalist Eamonn McCabe (1948–2022). McCabe first became known as a sports photographer before going on to work for leading British publications, including The Observer and The Guardian. Over several decades, he supported emerging photographers and made a significant contribution to the development and promotion of photography through his publications, books and public appearances. The fellowship continues this legacy by helping a new generation of photographers develop their own projects and build international careers.

What the Winner Receives
The winner will receive a £3000 grant to develop a new photography project. In addition, organisers will provide professional mentoring from an experienced specialist in the field. Upon completion, the project will be published by The Guardian and presented through the Royal Photographic Society, helping it reach a wider international audience.

Who Can Apply
Applications are open to young photographers from any country worldwide who will be under the age of 31 at the application deadline. The fellowship is open regardless of nationality or place of residence. It is designed for both emerging and established young photographers interested in developing a strong author-led project.

Theme of the Fellowship
For 2026, applicants are invited to create a photography project on the theme of “sporting achievement.” Organisers emphasise that the theme can be interpreted very broadly. In addition to professional sport, projects exploring amateur, community and local sport are encouraged, as well as stories related to physical and mental health, community integration, support for displaced people and other social aspects of sport. Creative and unconventional interpretations of the theme are also welcome.

What Types of Projects Are Eligible
Projects must be new and previously unpublished. Organisers are looking for ideas with documentary, journalistic or artistic value that can be presented to a broad audience after completion. Applications should demonstrate not only a compelling subject but also a realistic plan for completing the project within one year of receiving the grant.

Why Apply
The Eamonn McCabe Fellowship combines several valuable opportunities: financial support, professional mentoring and international publication of the completed project. For young photographers, it offers a chance not only to secure funding but also to present their work to a professional audience, gain experience working with leading photography organisations and expand their international professional network.

How to Apply
To apply, candidates must register through the Royal Photographic Society application portal, complete the application form and submit a description of their proposed project. Following the review process, shortlisted applicants will be invited to an online interview via Zoom. The winner is expected to be announced at the end of September 2026.

The deadline for applications is 3 August 2026.
