Between Bridges Residency 2027 — residency in Berlin with a €1500 grant and €5000 exhibition budget

Six months working in Berlin, your own exhibition space and the opportunity to develop a project within one of the city’s most prominent independent contemporary art institutions. Between Bridges has launched an international call for applications for artists, duos and collectives working in contemporary art and exploring research-based and social themes.

About the residency
The programme runs from January to June 2027 in the Schöneberg district.
Residents are provided with two large work and exhibition spaces, a study, a storage room, a kitchen and technical areas with a total area of around 100 m². The space is located in a residential building near Wittenbergplatz station — in one of Berlin’s districts where the city’s connection to the contemporary art scene is particularly strong.
The programme concludes with an exhibition or a public presentation of the project. For many artists, this is an opportunity not only to focus on new work, but also to develop a fully-fledged exhibition project within an international professional environment, gain new exhibition experience and present their practice to a Berlin audience.

Financial support
Participants receive a monthly stipend of €1,500, regardless of the number of participants in the project. In addition, a budget of €5,000 is provided for the production of an exhibition or public presentation. This is particularly important for independent artists, as many European residencies offer only a workspace without additional support for staging an exhibition.
Please note that the programme does not provide accommodation.
The residency space is used exclusively for work and project preparation, so participants are responsible for arranging their own accommodation in Berlin. However, this format often proves convenient for artists who wish to immerse themselves more deeply in the city’s artistic scene and establish their own rhythm of life and work in Berlin.

Who is the programme suitable for
The residency is suitable for artists, photographers, video artists, practitioners working with performance and interdisciplinary projects, as well as small artistic collectives. Projects exploring society, memory, identity, the urban environment, human rights and contemporary visual language will be particularly well suited to the programme.
However, the organisers do not require ‘political art’ as a prerequisite for participation. The main criteria remain the quality of the artistic practice, the thoughtfulness of the project and the potential for the idea to develop within an exhibition format.

About the Between Bridges Foundation
Between Bridges is a foundation established by Wolfgang Tillmans in 2017.
The organisation supports contemporary art, LGBTQ+ rights, anti-racist initiatives, and projects related to humanism and the development of democracy.
In recent years, the residency has become an important meeting point for artists working with contemporary social and cultural processes.
A particular highlight of the programme is the opportunity to visit studios and meet artists, curators and members of the Between Bridges professional network. For many artists, such a residency is not only a period of creative work but also a gateway into Berlin’s international art scene.
