RostockStipendium — an international residency programme in Germany offering a monthly grant of €1,500
Sometimes a calm and supportive working environment becomes the most valuable resource for a new project. RostockStipendium offers artists between two and four months to live and work in the historic centre of Rostock, providing a monthly fellowship, a spacious live-work studio, and the opportunity to focus on developing their artistic practice without the distractions of everyday life.
The programme has been running for many years and is one of the few independent municipal artist fellowships in Germany. Today it is organised by Kunstverein zu Rostock with the support of the Hanseatic and University City of Rostock. The residency takes place at Schleswig-Holstein-Haus, a historic building that houses both the gallery of the art association and a fully equipped studio apartment for residents.
Who Can Apply
Applications are open to international artists working in painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, illustration, performance, and video art. Applications from artists with children and artist collectives are particularly welcome, as the studio apartment offers enough space to comfortably accommodate more than one person. However, the fellowship amount is not increased for collaborative projects. Students are not eligible to apply.
How the Programme Works
The residency lasts between two and four months. Up to four fellowships are awarded each year. Participants receive:
— a €1,500 monthly fellowship;
— a free studio apartment at Schleswig-Holstein-Haus;
— two spacious workrooms;
— a bedroom with an additional sleeping space;
— a kitchen and bathroom;
— free Wi-Fi;
— the opportunity to present their work during Open Studio events;
— the opportunity to participate in exhibition projects organised by Kunstverein zu Rostock.
What to Consider
One of the key requirements of the programme is that the proposed project should have a connection to Rostock, one of Rostock’s partner cities, or the federal state of Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania. This does not mean applicants must live or work in Germany, but they should clearly explain how their project relates to the region. Projects exploring the intersection of art and science are also particularly welcome, reflecting Rostock’s identity as a university city.
During the residency, artists take part in Open Studio events, presenting their work to the public. This is an excellent opportunity to connect with the local art community and establish new professional relationships.
How to Apply
Applications are accepted by postal mail only—email applications will not be considered.
Applicants should prepare:
— a completed application form;
— an artistic CV of up to 1,800 characters;
— a project description of up to 1,800 characters;
— a portfolio including up to 20 works;
— optionally, one catalogue or illustrated book;
— a stamped self-addressed return envelope.
Applicants working in video art and performance may additionally submit a permanent download link to their video materials, but these files do not replace the required paper application.
