Sten Malmquist Award — a 4–6 week residency in Sweden with production support

The tranquillity of south-eastern Skåne, the small town of Tomelilla, and the opportunity to focus on practice without external noise — this format is for those who want to do more than just “stay at the residence”; they want to build their work in dialogue with a specific place. The programme is aimed at professional artists whose main activity takes place outside Sweden.
The residency will take place in the spring of 2027 and will last 4–6 weeks. The main focus is on work related to the place and its context. Not only studio practice is important, but also interaction with the local community: master classes, lectures, public presentation of results.

What the programme includes
Accommodation: single non-smoking room, breakfast included.
Travel: one return flight in economy class.
Workspace: studio, Wi-Fi, access to the library and cultural institutions.
Production costs: possible by prior agreement within the framework of the project.
Working languages: Swedish and English.
At the end of the residency, a public presentation of the project is expected. The exhibition or open meeting with the audience will be held in collaboration with Tomelilla Konsthall, the municipal art gallery that oversees the programme.

Who is eligible
Professional artists who are actively working on the international scene are invited to participate. Priority is given to authors of non-Swedish nationality whose main activity is outside Sweden.
Suitable fields include:
visual arts, sculpture, textiles, film, video, and installation.
Openness to interaction with the local art community is expected. This is not a formality, but part of the programme’s logic: work is seen as a process of exchange rather than isolated production.
The grant is awarded every two years and can only be received once.

Responsibilities and conditions
The work must be related to the context of Tomelilla and south-eastern Skåne. It is not about a literal depiction of the landscape but rather about a project that takes into account the place — its environment, history, and social or cultural context. It is important to show a willingness to work in dialogue with the space and the local community — this should be taken into account when applying.
You must provide your own personal and property insurance, a valid visa (if required) and food.
Submit an application that includes: CV/biography, list of exhibitions and projects, description of the project you plan to implement during the residency, and documentation of your artistic practice with visual materials.

The deadline for submitting applications is 30 April 2026.
