Krull Stiftung — a grant of €1,200 per month for artists living in Berlin and Brandenburg

Annual financial support that does not require artists to juggle their artistic practice with a regular part-time job – it is precisely these working stipends that often provide artists with the opportunity to focus on developing a series of works, conducting research or working on a long-term project. In 2027, the German Krull Stiftung will once again launch a programme of working grants for artists living and working in Berlin and Brandenburg.
The foundation is offering up to three grants of €1,200 per month for a period of 12 months — from January to December 2027. The programme is designed to support sustainable artistic practice and the development of independent artistic projects in the field of visual arts.
Applications are open to artists working in painting, printmaking, sculpture and photography.
As part of the 2027 open call, the programme does not accept projects in the fields of video art, digital art and performance art.

Who is eligible for the grant
The programme is aimed at professional artists who:
— live and work in Berlin or Brandenburg;
— have an art education or many years of professional experience;
— are in the process of developing their own artistic voice;
— require financial support to continue working on their project.
Students are not eligible to apply.
This grant may be particularly relevant for artists already working within the German art context and developing a long-term practice in Berlin or Brandenburg.

It is important to note that
Krull Stiftung is not a grant for the production of an exhibition project, but a financial support programme aimed at fostering a sustainable artistic practice. The organisers are interested not only in individual projects, but also in the artist’s overall artistic stance, their independence and potential for further development.
A key criterion remains the existence of a genuine need for support. The jury also takes into account previous artistic activity, participation in exhibitions, grants and professional projects.
The Foundation reserves the right to link the award of a grant to participation in a group exhibition in Berlin.

How to apply
Applications must be submitted via the foundation’s official application form. The application must include:
— a CV;
— a portfolio;
— a description of the artistic project and working concept;
— documents confirming your place of residence and professional activities.
Applications must be submitted online in electronic form.
The decision will be made by an independent panel of experts, and the results of the selection process are scheduled to be announced in the summer of 2026.

Why this is a good opportunity
Unlike short-term residencies and project-based open calls, annual working grants allow artists to build a more sustainable working rhythm and focus on their practice without constant pressure for immediate results.
For artists working in Germany, the Krull Stiftung offers not only financial support but also the chance to strengthen their presence within the local professional community in Berlin and Brandenburg.
An additional advantage is the programme’s duration: 12 months is a rare format for independent art grants in Europe, particularly in the field of visual arts.

The deadline for applications is 31 May 2026.
